Nic Careem
Nic Careem is a British social entrepreneur, humanitarian and internationally respected community leader whose work has, for more than thirty years, focused on building stronger communities through education, partnership and social innovation. His career has been dedicated to bringing together people from different cultures, faiths and sectors to create practical solutions that promote equality, opportunity and lasting social impact.
He is the founder and custodian of the House of Commons Nelson Mandela Legacy Book, one of the world’s most significant private collections of handwritten tributes to Nelson Mandela. Created in 1999 to commemorate Mandela’s historic visit to the UK Parliament, the leather-bound volume contains more than 700 personal messages from heads of state, parliamentarians, Nobel Peace Prize laureates, global business leaders, artists, sports personalities, faith leaders and young people. The collection stands as a unique historical record celebrating Mandela’s values of reconciliation, justice, dignity and forgiveness.
Building upon this remarkable legacy, Nic established the Letter to Nelson Mandela Initiative, an international educational programme encouraging young people aged 9–18 to become active global citizens by reflecting on Mandela’s principles and expressing their own vision for a fairer, more compassionate and sustainable world. The initiative promotes leadership, empathy, critical thinking and civic responsibility through the power of education.
Throughout his career, Nic has conceived and led numerous initiatives addressing community cohesion, anti-hate education, youth development, public health, social inclusion and international cooperation. His collaborative approach has enabled him to work with parliamentarians, diplomats, educational institutions, charitable foundations, healthcare organisations and business leaders across the United Kingdom and internationally.
Nic is also the founder of Blue Sky Network and Blue Sky Village, ambitious social enterprise initiatives designed to address poverty by integrating education, healthcare, employment, skills development and sustainable economic opportunity.
These projects reflect his long-held belief that meaningful partnerships between governments, businesses, universities and civil society can deliver transformational change for disadvantaged communities.
His commitment to public service extends across numerous charitable and civic initiatives, including projects recognising frontline healthcare workers, supporting anti-hate education and creating opportunities for young people. His ability to unite diverse organisations behind a common purpose has earned him the respect of leaders across many sectors.
Today, Nic continues to develop international collaborations inspired by the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. Through exhibitions, educational programmes, publications and global partnerships, he seeks to ensure that Mandela’s ideals continue to inspire future generations to build societies founded on justice, respect, compassion and service.
Vision
To create a world in which education, collaboration and compassion empower every individual to reach their full potential, while building stronger, more inclusive communities across nations and generations.
Guiding Principle
“The greatest legacy we can leave is not measured by personal achievement, but by the lives we inspire, the opportunities we create, and the hope we leave for future generations.”
Nic Careem
